Wood-Firing in Toulcův dvůr with Vaclav Kugler and Keramikum
Saturday - Tuesday, 18th - 21st July, full day workshop
In rami studio's first ceramic course abroad, we will be travelling to a wood-firing kiln near Prague to be taught by ceramicist Vaclav Kugler, a specialist in wood-firing, wheel-thrown ceramics and the development of high-fire glazes.
All participants should bring 10 - 20 bisque-fired pieces with them (maximum size - 1/2 litre jug) - please be aware that the oven will fire at between 1350° - 1380°! During the course participants will glaze their pieces (with Vaclav's handmade glazes), load the kiln, fire the kiln as a group and then unload the kiln to discuss results. Over the course of the workshop there will also be much time available to discuss the building and firing of wood-fired kilns, how to make high-fire glazes suitable for wood-firing, as well as discussion of almost anything else pottery-related!
The itinerary is as follows:
+ the course begins at 9 am on the Saturday. Bisque-fired pieces will be glazed and the kiln will be loaded. As soon as the kiln is loaded the group will be split up and will attend to the kiln firing in shifts of 3 persons - this will continue through the night and will be carried out under the leadership of Vaclav
+ the firing of the kiln in shifts will continue until around 5pm on the Sunday. During this time there will be opportunity for discussing the process with Vaclav and for taking breaks for food and when you aren't on kiln duty!
+ on the Monday we will take over a classroom space and spend the day learning from Vaclav - discussing glaze theory, kiln building, reduction firing, and generally asking Vaclav questions to help us further our ceramic understanding.
+ on the Tuesday we will unload the kiln, discuss results and then be ready to head back home at approximately 3pm.
It will also be possible during the workshop time and in the evenings to visit Toulcův dvůr, a fortress which has been rebuilt into a farm and education centre.
This course will be held in English.
Accommodation is included in the price and is booked for the evenings of the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th of July. All rooms are double rooms with two single beds and will therefore be shared. If anyone requires an individual room please let us know when you book your spot. We will try to organise this for you but an additional fee will be charged. The workshop begins at 9:00 on Saturday the 18th.
Preis: €435, high-fire glazes, wood-firing, wood and accommodation included. Transport to and from Toulcův dvůr, food and drink are not included. Please bring 10 - 20 bisque-fired pieces with you.
For me, the production of ceramics is a bizarre mix of physics and chemistry that needs to be combined with craftsmanship and artistic intent. The craft connects me with the matter of this world and I enjoy sharing this with anyone who is interested. Working with clay helps me to find a balance between the material and the intangible things in life.
I have been a ceramicist for 10 years now, becoming first involved during the building of a wood-burning phoenix kiln with Petr Toms, who is my ceramics teacher. I prefer wood-firing ceramics but also fire in gas and electric kilns or raku-fire my pieces.
I now run an open ceramics studio in Prague where I produce my pieces, teach ceramics and ceramic technology and help others to find their own, unique way with clay.
