Enjoy an inspiring talk at rami by the renowned artist Zsófia Karsai!

Zsófia started to pay attention to complex, and seemingly difficult objects at the University of Applied Arts. She stimulated the observers to discover her artworks, in order to find every object’s meaning by themselves.

Later she started to create objects of use: clocks, simple instruments and various patience games. Her artworks are interactive, a kind of opportunity for meditation. These objects only show their meaning if we touch or throw them, turn them upside down, knock on them or peek inside them. She wants to revive our most ancient instinct, the reflex of touching, thus breaking our everyday routine and leading us to quiet contemplation.

This inherent wish to teach and her way of perception began to intensify during her 6-month internship in Japan.

Zsófia plays with shadows, shapes, colours and countless textures. Even her smallest object can fill a grand hall with its unique mood and naturalness. Pictures and sculptures became more and more important to her in recent years. Her mission is invariably present in all her artworks: to stop us, make us think and stimulate our emotions.

She continuously learns and investigates new techniques, and actively participates at international ceramics symposia. She is present at every notable Hungarian exhibition with her artwork and is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) since 2009.

#ramitalks with MONIKA MARTYKÁNOVÁ

Enjoy a talk at rami by ceramic artist Monika Martykanova covering selected recent projects!

From the beginning of her studies, Monika was interested in figurative porcelain, clear material and shapes. Her inspiration comes from society and her pieces often reflect current times. As she is still student she tries to experiment with material and its form and limits.

One piece, titled Good Mother, is based on a Meissen statue from the 18th century. The name is reunderstood as the mother of the 21st century, a woman who is under societal pressure and should fulfil certain ideals; a mother today who should be multifunctional - taking care of children, going to work, a cook, a cleaning lady, a mistress, an office worker, a secretary…

In her latest piece she is inspired by 3D printing and its combination with traditional and manual production. Instead of using a 3D printer, Monika developed her own technique to manually create a similar effect the the printer. She illustrates the importance of the human element in this time of technology.

A more recent piece comments on circuses and the emotions evoked during discussions and protests against the use of animals in circuses.

Monika also enjoys cooperating with artist from different fields. With Japanese illustrator Saki Matsumoto she has developed a series of hip flasks with underglaze painting, and motifs based on Japanese culture, mythological creatures, ghosts and nature.
